Benefit Of Flavonoids...The Healing Plant
Power!
What are the health benefit of
flavonoids?
Flavonoids or bioflavonoids are nutritional substances that
are nearly all found in plants, which means they are also
common in fruits and vegetables.
They are part of a larger group of molecules called
polyphenol compounds.
They are excellent antioxidants too.
The reason for this is that the structure of flavonoid
compounds makes them easy to donate electrons to other
molecules. To understand the process check out the
explanation for how antioxidants
works.
All flavonoids are antioxidants, but some are stronger
antioxidants than others, and the reason for this is all
down to their molecular structure.
Flavonoids are not produced in the body. Best
sources include tea leaves, oranges, citrus fruits, apples, onions, red grapes, berries, and pine bark.
How do flavonoids work?
Well, like carotenoids, they serve as plant
pigments that filter out harmful wavelenghts of
light.
Bioflavonoid-rich plant extracts have been used successfully
by Herbalists for centuries to treat various illnesses and
ailments.
Apparently flavonoids have vitamin like
functions.
They were discovered in 1936 by Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, M.D.,
Ph.D and were originally named vitamin P. The reason for the
'P'(short for permeability) was that he found flavonoids helped
against capillary permeability, making them less
fragile.
In other words it helped prevent bruising. Later, though,
most scientists dropped the 'P' name.
What is the health benefit of flavonoids and what do they
do?
Ok, they improve memory and concemtration and
are used to treat ADD (attention deficit disorder).
They regulate nitric oxide, a potent free
radical that is a regulator of blood flow.
Your heart will thank you for taking flavonoids...they
prevent blood clots, protect against the bad (LDL) cholesterol,
and, if you have high blood pressure, it will be lowered.
Attention all men...it will improve sexual
function!
Inflammation is reduced and your
immune system will get a boost.
